The first Kiwanis club was organized in Detroit, Michigan in 1915. In 1924 a constitution was adopted defining the organization as a community service organization for men. In 1987 membership was opened to women. The Nebraska-Iowa District (established in 1949?) is the umbrella organization for the individual clubs of Nebraska and Iowa. The Sugarhouse Kiwanis Club was chartered in 1953. It was sponsored and organized by the Kiwanis Club of Bonneville, Salt Lake City, Utah. There were 75 original charter members. One of those members was Joseph M. Sehee (1917-2002) who was an active member receiving numerous awards. He held every club office such as President, Secretary, and Club Bulletin Editor.
